Filmfest: Vanaja

Amy and I saw "Vanaja" by Rajnesh Domalpalli, an Indian movie as beautiful as disquieting. In its theme of lower caste members being punished for trying to better their lives it reminded me of "A Fine Balance", the novel by Rohinton Mistry. The movie's protagonist is a a teenage girl named Vanaja. Ultimately, she is mistreated because she pursues the chance of advancement that her talent as a dancer, her intelligence, and her willpower seem to promise. Everybody in the movie is driven by ambition, but for our heroine ambition is indistinguishable from mere perseverance and inventiveness in her struggle to survive. The only exception, the only contented and entirely positive figure, is Vanaja's girlfriend, and their tender friendship provide the sweetest moments of the movie.

Der Film wurde im Februar 2007 bei den Internationalen Filmfestspielen Berlin mit dem Preis für "Bester Erstlingsfilm" ausgezeichnet, also würde ich mal davon ausgehen, dass er in Deutschland auch zu sehen sein sollte, obwohl ich ihn so auf die Schnelle in keinem Kinoprogramm gefunden habe. Von der Handlung letztendlich frustrierend, ist der Film trotzdem auf jeden Fall sehenswert, alleine der Farbharmonien und auch auf jeden Fall der schauspielerischen Leistungen wegen.
